Article Snippet: The vestibular apparatus has been implicated in the pathogenesis of motion sickness since the early twentieth century, and its primary functions in regulating balance, vestibulo-ocular reflexes, and spatial orientation have been well established (for review, see Raphan and Cohen 2002; Forbes et al. 2015).. Increasing evidence also suggests that the maintenance of blood pressure during orthostatic challenges relies on inputs from the vestibular system, through anatomical substrates between vestibular nuclei to areas within the brainstem involved in cardiovascular homeostasis, as well as the baroreceptors (Carter and Ray 2008; Kaufmann et al. 2002; Kerman et al. 2000; Hume and Ray 1999; Cui et al. 1997; Yates et al. 1991, 1993; for review, see Yates et al. 2014).. While used extensively to study posture and locomotion (Britton et al. 1993; Day et al. 1997; Forbes et al. 2015), our laboratory was the first to use galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) as a means of selectively activating the vestibular apparatus to examine vestibulosympathetic reflexes in humans (Bolton et al. 2004). |
